Follow the event trail through this exciting 2009-2010 year at the Academy. I hope to recap the highlights and encourage you to mark your calendars with events coming up, so that your whole family can experience the magic of our elementary year.

Dear Parents,

It has been a wonderful and exciting first few weeks of school!

195 kindergarten to 6th grade students started back to school with Mission Montessori Academy this year.  Our new campus opened with an array of primary classrooms and a beautiful lower elementary classroom for students  in the first through the third grade.  Ms. Amy Furgason, and her assistant, Ms. Kim Mahr have created  an exciting environment full of colorful cultural studies, art, music and a full array of wonderful math, geometry and language materials.

I would like for you to welcome, Mary Hazlett to the 96th Street Campus., and to the School Office .  She will be taking over for Ms. Elizabeth, who has moved on to a new and exciting opportunity in her life. Mary  will be handling the day to day -home to classroom, and classroom to home  communications. She has not skipped a beat in helping to make our office and school run more smoothly. Be sure to say hello when you see her on our campus. She comes to us from the 130th street campus and many of the children have already developed a wonderful relationship with her.

Mission Montessori Academy is very excited about the programs planned for the year which present great opportunities for learning. Our Year of Green curriculum launched just last week with a day filled with great hands on experiences related to our environment. Poet John Fox spent two full days with our upper elementary students teaching them how to share their voice and their stories through poetry. Our middle school will be "going to the land" for the very first time. Naturalist, Vince Pinto, is their guide and will be sharing his own beautiful piece of Patagonia with them over the course of three days. The garden is beginning to bloom with squash blossoms which Ms. Karen, our master gardener, and parent, Maria Maldonado used as the focus of a cooking class, showing the students how to make a traditional squash blossom quesadillas. Stay tuned for more wonderful adventures.

Two very important themes will be running through our new school year:  Building Bridges: Celebrating Diversity and A Year of Green.  Our new year will include enlightening  speakers and  exciting events representing Mission Montessori Academy's cultural diversity.  Children will be interviewing their families and other children's families to find out more about their roots, customs and celebrations.

Another important theme centers around the fact that Mission Montessori Academy has been selected by the U.S. Green Schools Foundation to be the first school site to be included in their  Arizona education program. This program is  directed at educating future stewards of the environment, who will not only understant the basic science, but will feel intimately connected to and responsible for the world around them.  This program will provide great lesson plans aligned to a calendar of environmental events with fieldtrip ideas  and  guest speakers  to support them.   Our school has also been awarded a grant...
